A brief history of PowerPoint. I found two things interesting about this piece. First, PowerPoint was published by the same company that made the original version of FileMaker for the Mac. The second, more interesting thing, was that PowerPoint was the result of a pivot. Forethought Software initially wanted to bring the object-oriented paradigm from Smalltalk into the world of documents. They envisioned a system where people would be able to stitch together live documents in highly interactive ways. PowerPoint, for them, was something to do while they waited for hardware to catch up their vision.
Of course, their original vision did come to pass, as OLE, so the story has somewhat of a happy ending.
